Is my hairline receding or maturing?

We get a lot of questions from a young audience asking about their receding hairline and if it is normal and if they need to get a hair transplant to fix it. In a lot of cases when those of a younger age come into the clinic with what they think is a receding hairline it’s actually a maturing hairline.

Today we’re going to help you work out if you’ve got a receding or maturing hairline, and what the difference between the two is.

What is a receding hairline?

A receding hairline is something that forms when you’re suffering with male pattern baldness (also known as androgenic alopecia). Male pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss and affects up to 70% of men and up to 40% of women during their lifetime.

Male pattern baldness can follow a pattern of a receding hairline. The hair on the crown and temples can begin to thin leaving a horseshoe shape of hair around the head. Male pattern baldness happens as a result of hair follicles shrinking due to the effects of androgenic hormones.

Two androgens that are involved are testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), these hormones work to break down the hair growth cycle which eventually causes hair loss. As time passes your hairline can continue to recede and can end in more severe hair loss.

What is a maturing hairline?

As you age your body changes in many different ways that are completely normal, and your hairline is one of those changes. As you get older you can notice your hairline becoming slightly higher, this process is simply known as your hairline maturing.

The most obvious changes to your hairline happen in the teenage years and your juvenile hairline will change. It will go from having slightly rounded edges and being quite low, to becoming slightly higher up and less defined.

In most cases, you will start seeing a maturing hairline in your teenage years, usually around the age of 17. This does differ from person to person and can happen anywhere between the age of 17 and 29. Maturing hairlines can happen to anyone and does not depend on a genetic predisposition.

How do I know when I need hair restoration treatment?

We often get questions from people of quite a young age asking about our FUE hair transplants to fix their hairline. In most cases, these people are referring to a maturing hairline, which, in most cases isn’t something they should be worried about.

At the Harley Street Hair Clinic, we do not like to offer FUE hair transplants to clients that are of a young age, when you’re young your hair loss can be unpredictable and this makes it hard to plan a hair transplant for future hair loss. We recommend waiting to see if your hairline continues to go further back, take photos once a month and if after 6 months there is a noticeable difference consider coming to the clinic to discuss your hair loss with us.
