What is transgender hair surgery?

Female to Male hair transplant
For those undergoing FTM transition, your male hormones can change your appearance – which can include changes to your hair. Over time you can experience male pattern baldness. Male pattern baldness can happen with the male hormone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) attaches itself to the hair follicles. Over time, this alters the hair growth cycle and can cause the hair to shed and not grow back.
There is no treatment for male pattern baldness, there are some hair loss medications such as finasteride that can be used to freeze hair loss, however, it cannot reverse any signs of male pattern baldness that you may have occurred. If this is the case, an FUE hair transplant can be used to give the appearance of a full head of natural-looking hair for our FTM transgender patients.
Hair transplantation surgery can also be used during a female to male transition to help create a desirable beard and eyebrows. As part of the transition, you will have eyebrow and beard hair grow and change, however, for some the hair can be patchy or not as full as you would like.
Male to Female hair transplant
Transitioning from male to female can, however, have the opposite effect. The change in your oestrogen levels can counteract the effect of DHT on hair, which can counteract the effects of DHT on the hair.
However, if you had some transgender balding as a male before transitioning you could be left with thinning areas on the scalp or even a hairline that has some resemblance to a receding male.
